In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD) joins other state agencies, financial institutions, and national organizations to help promote the importance of money management and planning as Missourians pursue their education and career goals.

Building smart financial habits is essential for future success, especially for Missourians who may be interested in furthering their education or advancing in their career,” said Dr. Bennett Boggs, Commissioner of the Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. “MDHEWD’s vision is to empower every Missourian with the skills and education needed for success, and offering students and job seekers helpful resources about financial literacy at no cost is an important piece in helping them find that success.”

MDHEWD offers a variety of free financial resources online and in person. These resources offer information about building and managing a budget, which can be especially challenging while attending college, as well as training to help establish long-term financial plans. To learn more, individuals can:

  • Explore the department’s online library of publications, which includes a Financial Aid Guide, Planning for Financial Success, Smart About Spending, and more
  • Visit Journey to College for additional information about securing financial aid, money management, and other financial guidance that supports higher education and career journeys
  • Visit one of the many Missouri Job Centers across the state to get helpful information and tips about financial literacy in person

MDHEWD also offers free resources and support to counselors, teachers, and career access professionals at Missouri high schools to help support students planning their next step. Publications can be accessed online, speakers can provide presentations, and one-on-one support is available through the department’s outreach professionals throughout the state.

“Our department is happy to supply informational material at no cost to anyone on a path to securing a degree, certificate, or training to help prepare for a quality career,” said Alison Notter, Director of Outreach for the Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. “We also encourage school personnel to browse our resources and request copies of publications that may be useful in offering guidance to students as they consider options after high school.”

In addition to MDHEWD’s resources, the Missouri Treasurer’s Office also maintains the Missouri Financial Literacy Portal to help with financial success. These resources help Missourians take control of their finances and learn skills to help them succeed.

To learn more, MDHEWD encourages Missourians to follow MDHEWD’s social media pages. The department will share helpful tips and resources all month long as we celebrate Financial Literacy Month.
