About MDHEWD

Putting Missourians on a path to learn, work, and prosper

The Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development (MDHEWD) was established in 2019 to combine the Missouri Department of Higher Education, the Division of Workforce Development, and the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center. Realigning postsecondary education with the public workforce system gives Missourians the full breadth of options available to fit their interests, resources, and abilities.

The vision of the joint agency is simple: Every Missourian empowered with the skills and education needed for success.

MDHEWD reports to two governing boards. The Coordinating Board for Higher Education appoints a Commissioner to oversee the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. The State Workforce Development Board serves as a convener of state, regional, and local workforce system partners. The department carries out its work through the following functional groups:

  • Office of Operations
  • Office of Postsecondary Policy
  • Office of Workforce Development
  • Office of Performance & Strategy
  • Office of Communications and Outreach
  • Office of the General Counsel
